26-year-old defenseman leaves the Boston Bruins organization: Signs with a divisional rival
Entering free agency, the Boston Bruins opted not to hand a qualifying offer to a 26-year-old defenseman leading to him leaving the organization.
During the
NHL trade deadline, General Manager Don Sweeney cleaned house for the Boston Bruins trading away a lot of notable names.
Entering the off-season, the Bruins had a bunch of players depart from the team, and now another defenseman has left.
Mitchell was not given a qualifying offer by the Boston Bruins which lead to him leaving the organization.
During free agency, Mitchell ended up signing a one-year contract worth $775,000 with the Detroit Red Wings.
The Detroit Red Wings need depth on defenseman so it makes sense they take a shot on someone like Mitchell.
Especially considering the market for defenseman wasn't anything special during the 2025 NHL free agency.
Mitchell did get some chances in the NHL over those two years, appearing in 28 games with the Bruins recording three assists, eight hits, 36 blocks and a plus-4 rating.
In 47 games with the Providence Bruins, Mitchell scored four goals, 27 points, and was a plus-11.
Best of luck on your new opportunity, Ian!
