According to NHL insider Andy Strickland, Sam Bennett made it clear that he will not be signing with a Canadian team in the off-season. Even though he started his career out with a Canadian franchise in the Calgary Flames, he stated that he will not go back to one.

During his time with the Flames, Bennett did not reach his potential. It was only when he got to Florida after being traded that he ended up becoming a versatile forward.

Bennett and the Florida Panthers also won the Stanley Cup last year, where a Canadian team has not won one in over 30 years, making it less appealing to go to a Canadian market.
