The New York Islanders and Utah Mammoth were suggested to undergo a trade that fell through, and recent insight has revealed it worked in Boston's favor.

The Boston Bruins organization scored big when they needed it the most, during the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery, as this franchise acquired the seventh overall pick for the 2025 Entry Draft.
The Boston Bruins needed some luck, although you normally don't need much luck with a top-10 draft pick, it appeared as though the Black and Gold dodged a huge trade due to a huge asking price.
According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the New York Islanders called the Utah Mammoth in regard to trading for the fourth overall pick in the draft to target James Hagens.
However the reported asking price was a deal surrounding Mathew Barzal, something the Islanders were absolutely against doing.
"One of the things I saw was a lot of different reports with respect to Utah and their discussions around the fourth overall pick. I had heard they wanted-it would have been a larger deal-but they wanted Mat Barzal in that mix if they were going to move the fourth overall pick,'' stated Pagnotta. «I was told by someone with the Islanders that, «We like Hagens. I don't know if we like him that much. So, obviously didn't get anywhere.»

Failed trade between the New York Islanders in Utah Mammoths benefitted the Boston Bruins immensely

Although the previous report was just speculation, Pagnotta is a well-trusted reporter, meaning this is more likely true than not.
That being said, this was a huge failed trade by the Islanders, as it was widely known how much interest they showed in Hagens, a Long Island native and they targeted him despite winning the first overall pick in the NHL Draft Lottery this past May.
This ultimately concluded in James Hagens landing to the Boston Bruins and Don Sweeney at No. 7 overall.
This young talent was initially seen as the instant pick in the draft for quite some time, but his stock dipped, and it is astonishing that the Boston Bruins were able to claim this star as he fell all the way to seven.
With all being said, this was a massive win for the Boston Bruins, and fans are grateful for the fall out trade which was expected to erupt between the Islanders and Mammoths.
