Former Boston Bruins coach Mike Sullivan was just fired by the Pittsburgh Penguins, and has now sparked some major rumours.

This morning, Kyle Dubas and the Pittsburgh Penguins decided it was time to move on from head coach Mike Sullivan, who has been with the team for a decade, shocking a lot of people.
«On behalf of Fenway Sports Group and the Penguins organization, I would like to thank Mike Sullivan for his unwavering commitment and loyalty to the team and City of Pittsburgh over the past decade,» said president of hockey operations and general manager Kyle Dubas. «Mike is known for his preparation, focus, and fierce competitiveness. I was fortunate to have a front-row seat to his dedication to this franchise for the past two seasons. He will forever be an enormous part of Penguins history, not only for the impressive back-to-back Cups, his impact on the core of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and Bryan Rust, but more importantly, for his love and loyalty to the organization.»

Sullivan and Penguins Mutually Agree

It wasn't a true firing, instead more of a mutual agreement to let Sullivan have a different opportunity outside of Pittsburgh, and give them a chance to build a new identity. Sullivan did still have two years remaining on his deal before this announcement.
«A thorough search for the next head coach of the Penguins will begin immediately,» the team said. The Pens join the Blackhawks, Bruins, Ducks, Flyers, Kraken, and Rangers as teams with active vacancies at head coach.

With the Boston Bruins not having a head coach, and upper management confirming that they will be searching for a head coach in the off-season, there has been multiple rumours about Sullivan coming back to Boston, this time as head coach.
There has been a lot of chatter amongst hockey people about Mike Sullivan and the Boston Bruins for weeks. This is an interesting development
Sullivan was an assistant coach for the Boston Bruins from 2002-05, it will be interesting to see what happens, but you have to assume someone with his type of resume will be at the top of the list for the Bruins.
