Jake DeBrusk reveals his future with the Bruins
The Boston Bruins have experienced a significant offseason transformation.
Following a challenging season, they bid farewell to several free agents, embracing a new chapter.
Among the notable storylines, one quietly looms over the team: the future of top-six winger Jake DeBrusk.
Jake DeBrusk enters the final year of his two-year, $8 million contract with the Bruins, and his performance last season, with a career-high 27 goals and 50 points, puts him in a favorable position for a significant payday.
However, what's interesting is DeBrusk's desire to remain in Boston, the only NHL team he's ever known.
In his own words, DeBrusk stated,
«I'm hoping to stay [with the Boston Bruins]...It's the only team that I know and the team that I grew up with." He expressed optimism that things will work out with the team he loves.
DeBrusk's commitment to Boston is undoubtedly a positive sign for the Bruins, and it aligns with their goals.
While words can be just words, DeBrusk's eagerness to stay with the team is apparent.
Instead of playing coy about his future, he openly expressed his desire to remain in Boston, and that's something the Bruins' management likely appreciates.
It's worth noting that DeBrusk's journey hasn't been without its challenges.
He formally requested a trade during the 2021 offseason, which became public early in the 2021-22 season.
However, DeBrusk rescinded the trade request in 2022. Since then, he's been a pivotal player for the Bruins, scoring 43 goals and 75 points in 96 games, often on the top line with Bergeron and Marchand.
DeBrusk's performance, particularly as a goal-scoring threat, has been exceptional.
His 43 goals are second-most on the Bruins since his move to the top line, and he ranks among the NHL's top even-strength goal scorers during that period.
Additionally, DeBrusk has demonstrated his playoff prowess with six goals and 10 points in his last 14 playoff games.
Considering DeBrusk's versatility as a winger and the Bruins' ample cap space, a contract extension seems logical.
The Bruins are well-positioned for negotiations, with significant projected cap space. What remains to be seen is the Bruins' eagerness to secure an extension. Past history suggests they've been proactive and willing to negotiate in-season.
The key takeaway is that DeBrusk is ready to engage in these negotiations, which bodes well for his Boston future.
