Jeremy Swayman Surfaces As An Unexpected Candidate To Be The Boston Bruins Next Captain

The Boston Bruins are reeling from a loss from their former Captain
Brad Marchand, who was a remnant of a bygone era, the Bruins' 2011 Stanley Cup victory.
The trade was something that was unexpected by all of us, and made Marchand the fifth captain to be traded, and not since Joe Thornton in 2005-2006.
This could be the second time in team history the
Bruins go without a captain for a significant amount of time.
The team is 7th in
the Atlantic Division with a record of 30-31-9, and are not likely to make the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Who could the
Bruins nominate for Captain in the meantime?
In order to do so, the
Bruins would have to make an exception for Swayman to wear the Captain's "C".
According to NHL Rule 14D Swayman technically cannot serve as Captain of the Bruins.
NHL Rule 14D states that «[n]o playing Coach or playing Manager or goalkeeper shall be permitted to act as Captain or Alternate Captain.»
But other teams have found a way with goalie Roberto Luongo serving as Captain of the Canucks.
He would have to be designated as the on-ice captain by the Bruins, and since Swayman holds influence over the locker room, he may not be a bad idea.
He holds himself and the team to high standards, and the flexibility of having Swayman as captain could allow the Bruins to develop other alternate captains on the ice during the retool.
If the team were radical enough to name Swayman as the Captain of the Bruins he would be only the eighth goalie in the league to serve as captain.
However, with
David Pastrnak being one of the longest-tenured Bruins left, it would deny him a rightful shot at the position, along with
Charlie McAvoy.
The Bruins have plenty of time to mull over the decision as the playoff season will be ramping up soon.
