A recent documentary revealed that Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney was offered a blockbuster trade by the New York Islanders, and reportedly rejected it.
With the NHL season basically about to begin, it was just revealed that a massive trade proposal was made from the New York Islanders to the Boston Bruins.
Leading all the way up to the NHL draft, there were rumors that the New York Islanders were in talks with the Boston Bruins to acquire the 7th overall pick.
Islanders offered the Bruins a blockbuster trade
The camera cuts to Darche on the phone talking to someone, and answers with «Sweens, how are you?»
To the right of Darche was assistant general manager Ryan Bowness, and after the call hung up he said, «He knows who you want to take, obviously so.»
Moments after that, Darche's phone rings again and Bownees says, «There he is.» The «he» in this context would be Sweeney. Darche picks it up, and simply says «Oh ok, thank you. Okay, bye.»
The New York Islanders were willing to part ways with both first round picks they had in order to move up and draft Hagens, but the Boston Bruins wanted a NHL ready player that would immediately make an impact, and it seems the Islanders did not offer that.
After striking out on making a deal to get
Hagens at the draft, Darche stated, «Well, we're picking at 16.»
This is such a great look for the Bruins, especially with Sweeney having a bad track record during the drafts, that another team wanted a player the Bruins selected so badly.
During his next season at Boston College, Hagens is going to be the face for them.
