A major development has surfaced for the Boston Bruins to sign Steven Stamkos.

The Tampa Bay Lightning kicked off their offseason yesterday and shocked the hockey world when they re-acquired Ryan McDonagh from the Nashville Predators, after trading him there two years ago.

According to David Pagnotta, McDonagh had to waive his NTC to be traded back to Tampa Bay, there was no salary retention, and his contract carries a $6.75M cap hit for the next two years.

McDonagh had to waive his NTC to go back to Tampa. There is no salary retention by the Preds. McDonagh has a $6.75M cap hit and 2 more years on his deal.

With that being said Pagnotta also reported that the Lightning currently only have $5.035M in cap space which definitely won't be enough to re-sign captain Steven Stamkos.

As it currently stands, the #GoBolts have $5.035M in cap space for the 2024-25 season. Gotta think TB has more up their sleeves heading towards July 1.

The Boston Bruins were linked to Steven Stamkos last year, and there was a lot of rumours that if he hit free agency, Boston would be one of the top spots for him. Could we see him coming to Boston in free agency?

Makes you wonder if Stamkos will actually be back or not 👀 #NHLBruins

If the Lightning are going to re-sign him they are going to have to figure out a way to get rid of a decent amount of cap space before July 1st, and this McDonagh trade did not help them at all.
