A recent report from an NHL insider confirmed that the Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings nearly pulled off a blockbuster trade during the NHL trade deadline.

The Boston Bruins made a lot of shocking moves at the trade deadline, shipping out a lot of big named players in the organization including Brandon Carlo, Charlie Coyle, Trent Frederic, Justin Brazeau, and the most shocking being captain Brad Marchand.
In return the Bruins added Marat Khusnutdinov, Jakub Lauko, Henri Jokiharju, Casey Mittelstadt, Fraser Minten and other top prospects along with a bunch of picks.
A new report revealed the Bruins nearly completed a blockbuster trade with the Detroit Red Wings at the deadline as well.

Bruins and Red Wings Failed Blockbuster

According to The Hockey Writers, the Detroit Red Wings tried to pursue Boston Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo, but were outbid by the Toronto Maple Leafs.
According to a source, the Red Wings had deep conversations with the Boston Bruins about defenseman Brandon Carlo. Ultimately, the Bruins opted to hold out for a better deal, and got one from the Toronto Maple Leafs.

While what was involved in Detroit's offer is unclear, adding Carlo would have solidified Detroit's defense now and moving in the future. The 28-year-old blueliner is signed for two more years at $4.1 million.

Carlo could have played a shutdown role on Detroit's second pair, freeing up Moritz Seider to play more minutes in the offensive zone. His contract also would have timed well with Axel Sandin Pellikka's development, allowing Detroit's top prospect to gradually take on more responsibility over the next two years.

Ultimately, Detroit got outbid. And now adding a top-four defenseman (or two) will be a top priority this offseason.

In return for Brandon Carlo, the Boston Bruins ended up acquiring one of their top prospects in Fraser Minten, and a first-round pick. This was one of the Bruins best returns during the NHL trade deadline.
