While he may not be on the bench due to injury, Nick Foligno brings much more with his presence. The intangible leadership of his game makes him irreplaceable.

Recognizing a Special Season

Due to that, it was announced on Monday morning that the veteran will be the team's representative for an NHL award this season. As per Bruins PR:

BOSTON - Bruins winger Nick Foligno is the Boston Bruins 2023 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy nominee, as selected by the Boston chapter of the Professional Hockey Writer's Association (PHWA). The Masterton Trophy is given to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

After an injured riddled first year in Boston that saw career lows in goals (2) and assists (11), he's bounced back in a big way this season. Foligno, 35, recorded 10 goals and 16 assists in 60 games with the Bruins before suffering a lower-body injury on February 29th.

He also set a new career-high with a +18 rating while leading the team's forwards with 147 hits.

Joe Haggerty of Boston Hockey Now, who is also the Professional Hockey Writers Association Boston Chapter Chair, shared the reasoning behind Foligno as the Bruins' choice.

As per Haggerty:

''Whether it's through his hardnosed, determined play or his leadership, or simply the smile and joy for hockey that he brings to the rink with him every day, I can't think of a more fitting candidate for the Masterton Trophy than Nick Foligno.''

Was this the right choice from the Bruins?
