The Boston Bruins trade a goaltender to the Detroit Red Wings in a completed trade
Detroit had acquired Rogie Vachon in hopes he would be their answer, but things did not work out.
At the time, the Boston Bruins had
Gilles Gilbert in net who had been a steady presence for most of the 70's, but he was also aging.
Bruins and Red Wings trade goaltenders
Both teams decided that a one-for-one trade involving goalies would work.
"45 years ago today ON THIS DAY in hockey history (July 15, 1980): The Boston Bruins acquire Rogatien 'Rogie' Vachon from the Detroit Red Wings for Gilles Gilbert"
The trade did not get desired results both teams though they would get, but it's gone down as a big trade because of NHL legend
Rogatien Vachon.
After breaking into the NHL with
the Montreal Canadiens in 1966-67, he had a record of 11-3 to help them reach the Stanley Cup Finals.
The following season he would go on to win his first Stanley Cup, along with the Vezina Trophy.
After leaving the Montreal Canadiens, he didn't end up winning another Cup, but helped Canada win the 1976 Canada Cup holding an impressive 1.39 Goals Against Average.
When arriving in Boston, he spent two years there on a fresh start before deciding to call in a career and retire from professional hockey.
