After winning the Stanley Cup, it has been revealed that the Panthers roster was deemed illegal, and now the NHL is taking action.

TVA Sports recently released a new report that revealed the Edmonton Oilers were at a major disadvantage to the Florida Panthers during the Stanley Cup Finals.
In the article it revealed that there was a massive $13 million difference between the Oilers and Panthers during their rematch.
Take a look:
"Indeed, the Florida club would have fielded a $93 million roster, $5 million more than the $88 million limit imposed by the National Hockey League (NHL), according to calculations by the PuckPedia website.

Conversely, the Edmonton Oilers, for their part, had salaries totaling $80.6 million for the last game of the final, a difference of just under $13 million."

PuckPedia also backed this up, making a post on X (Twitter).
This seems to be a common recurrence in the NHL, as the Tampa Bay Lightning recently pulled a similar move with Nikita Kucherov, and the Vegas Golden Knights with Mark Stone.
Now the NHL has had enough, and are taking action.

NHL is taking action on illegal rosters

The NHL has agreed on a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA), and moving forward whenever it kicks in for the 2026-27 season, a lineup such as the Panthers will be deemed illegal.
"At least the new collective bargaining agreement, which will take effect starting in the 2026-2027 season, will no longer allow teams to do this. A salary cap will be imposed in the playoffs based on the total salaries of active players during a game."
