NHL Organization Becomes First To Sign a Female To A Contract
The conversation about women's participation in high-level hockey, including the NHL, has persisted for years. Women's hockey, a well-established global sport, has gained renewed attention thanks to the Professional Women's Hockey League, featuring six North American franchises and a 24-game season.
In a groundbreaking move, the Kalamazoo Wings, affiliated with the Canucks, have made history by signing Mariah Fujimagari to a Professional Tryout (PTO) contract. Fujimagari, aged 29, brings experience from her time in the Swedish women's league.
This signing recalls the trailblazing moment when Manon Rheaume joined the Tampa Bay Lightning in the early 1990s. Rheaume's preseason appearance against the St. Louis Blues in 1992 was a significant milestone. Such signings challenge traditional norms, pushing hockey into new territory as it continues to evolve and grow.
