The Vegas Golden Knights, in their franchise's sixth NHL season, defeated the Florida Panthers 9-3 Tuesday night in Las Vegas to win the franchise's first Stanley Cup in five games.
The Golden Knights in their first year went all the way to the Stanley Cup Final, unfortunately coming up short.
Not many players from that team are still on the Vegas roster but there are still a few misfits.
Jonathan Marchessault, was one of those players on the team in 2018. It's amazing how far this group of players has come, especially those who originally joined the team in the expansion draft back in 2017. When coming into the organization they coined the nickname »The Golden Misfits,» as they consisted of players coming from teams that didn't want to or couldn't protect them.
In a beautiful tribute to that team, head coach Bruce Cassidy started the 2018 «Golden Misfits» at the beginning of game 5.
Smith–Karlsson–Marchessault
During an Interview postgame, Jonathan Marchessault said he didn't know the original misfits would start the game. They apparently found out just before they went out on the ice, and he said it meant a lot.
Bruce Cassidy was also asked about it, and he obviously had no problem doing such a small gesture.
»They're the original guys, right?» Cassidy said. »They're the foundation of this hockey team, the first building blocks started with them.»
Unfortunately one misfit was left out,
William Carrier was the only player on the original Misfits who didn't get to start the game.
Bruce Cassidy felt awful saying, »I told him, 'I can only start one left winger, so sorry.' But listen, they've been here since the beginning, they lost in a final like I did. I know how that feels. I'm very happy for them.»
