Gary Bettman Bans Pride, Military, and Black History Month Jerseys
The upcoming NHL season will see a change in team traditions as the NHL Board of Governors recently announced that specialty jerseys will no longer be worn during warmups.
These jerseys are closely tied to important causes such as Hockey Fights Cancer, Military Appreciation, and Pride, among others.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman stated that this decision aims to minimize distractions on the ice, as the focus should be on the game itself.
Last season, certain players choosing not to participate in specific events drew attention away from the significance of these causes. However, teams will still organize special nights dedicated to these causes, without the jerseys.
Fans can still purchase these special jerseys, although players will no longer wear them during warmups. The NHL seeks to maintain the essence of theme nights while shifting the spotlight towards the game and the underlying cause it supports.
