On December 3rd, 1987, one Boston Bruins legend paid the ultimate respect to another!
Thirty-five years ago today, the Bruins retired Phil Esposito's #7 and hung it in the rafters of the old Boston Garden. However, it was what current captain Ray Bourque did that stole the show.
In an ultimate show of respect, Bourque - who currently wore #7 - surprised Esposito by revealing his switch to his classic #77 that we all know now. It's still one of the classiest gestures between two NHL legends to this day.
Bourque would wear #77 for the remainder of his career, and it's now retired by the Bruins and the Colorado Avalanche, where he finished the final one-and-a-half seasons of his career.
