The Columbus Blue Jackets and GM Don Waddell have us all enthralled as it appears the next big trade chip is on the precipice, with Patrik Laine being an option.

The 26-year-old winger, may not be the same player he was at the beginning of this NHL career, but could still be a top 20+ goal scorer on a contending team.

Laine could be a part of any team's power-play and likely serve a 2nd-line role wherever he lands next. But due to the fact he is still in the NHL's Player Assistance Program, things get sticky.

According to newly appointed GM Don Waddell, Patrik Laine isn't allowed to be trade due to his attendance in the Players Assistance program.

Teams are desperate to talk to him before a trade occurs, but he has to exit the program before a trade can be initiated.

#CBJ GM Don Waddell said Patrik Laine remains in NHL/NHLPA players' assistance program, but expects docs to clear him "soon."
"Teams that have talked about (a trade), they want to talk with him if they're going to make a move."
#NHL clubs can only talk to Laine if he's cleared." Portzline said.

Waddell said the team is working with Laine's agent in order to make a move happen, and would like to not retain salary, but for now the future is uncertain.

"We're still working with his agent. He's still in the program. Once he gets out, we expect any day or sometime soon, teams I've talked about, they wanna talk to him. It's too early to say about money. Our hope is we wouldn't have to hold money." Waddell said.

Laine only appeared in 18 games this season with the Blue Jackets, scoring only 9 points( 6 G, 3 A) with 6 PIMS and was a plus/minus -10 on ice.

He has two years left on his $8.7 Million AAV contract and will become a UFA in 2025-2026.

It appears the story will of course develop further, as Laine exits the Assistance Program and his chapter in Columbus eventually comes to its logical end.

The Tampere, Finland native is eager for a fresh start.
