The Bruins May Have To Shop Two Of Their Top UFA's
The Boston Bruins should be actively assessing the NHL trade market for defenseman Dmitry Orlov and winger Tyler Bertuzzi. If negotiations or salary cap constraints prevent the Bruins from reaching an agreement with Orlov and/or Bertuzzi in the near future, they might have to consider parting ways with their rights. The Bruins could either trade their signing rights or opt for a sign-and-trade deal, similar to the recent move made by the New Jersey Devils involving defenseman Damon Severson.
Both Orlov and Bertuzzi are set to become unrestricted free agents on July 1st, and there is already significant interest in both players. AFP Analytics projects Orlov to command the third-highest contract among unrestricted free agents in 2023, estimated at 5 years with a $6.25 million AAV. Given the Bruins' salary cap limitations, they will likely be unable to re-sign Orlov unless they make significant cap adjustments. Bertuzzi, who is projected by AFP Analytics to secure a six-year contract with a $5.2 million cap hit, may also be out of the Bruins' financial reach.
Orlov expressed his anticipation for testing the free agent market in an interview with Sport-Express on June 2nd. He stated that while he is currently under contract with Boston until July 1st, he is looking forward to negotiations and the opening of the market. He also mentioned the desire for a long-term contract, as it provides stability and peace of mind.
A trusted NHL source revealed Bertuzzi's intention to explore free agency this summer. The source confirmed that Bertuzzi's camp is aware of the potential offers he could receive, especially after his impressive performance with the Bruins. Although the Bruins are keen on retaining Bertuzzi, his desire to test the market for the first time, coupled with the team's salary cap challenges, make it difficult to keep him.
General Manager Don Sweeney of the Boston Bruins and the agents representing Orlov and Bertuzzi have refrained from commenting on the contract talks. They will likely maintain this stance until decisions are reached. If indications continue to suggest that both players are heading to the open market, Sweeney should leverage the active NHL trade market to acquire valuable draft picks, which the Bruins are in dire need of.
