In a bold move, Boston Bruins' defenseman Charlie McAvoy is set to appeal his four-game suspension for a hit to the head of Oliver Ekman-Larsson, which occurred the day before Halloween.
According to a report from Sportsnet Insider, McAvoy wants the league to reevaluate the suspension's length.
"Hearing Charlie McAvoy is planning on appealing his four-game suspension,"
stated the source.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman will have the final say on the appeal, as the suspension was for fewer than six games.
"Because it was under six games, Commissioner Gary Bettman has the final say. Same as Rasmus Andersson,"
added the report.
While McAvoy's appeal may raise eyebrows, the NHL's rules dictate that an appeal can't result in a longer suspension, only a maintenance or reduction. The controversial hit to the head has garnered attention, as the NHL is keen on eradicating such plays from the game.
