The 59 wins for Montgomery beats the previous record set by Mike Babcock, who won 58 games in his first year with the Detroit Red Wings in 2005-06.
He previously broke the franchise record for the most wins by a coach in his first season on Thursday against the Blue Jackets. The record of 57, was first set by Tom Johnson during the 1970-71 season.
