An NHL insider just leaked some shocking information regarding Don Sweeney's contract extension with the Boston Bruins.
This move gave the Bruins General Manager an extra two-years with the organization despite the majority of the fan base calling for him to be fired.
What surprised many was the fact that President Cam Neely stated during the end of season press conference that this upcoming year was going to be a make or break for Sweeney.
There still isn't any clarification on why the Boston Bruins took this path as to signing Sweeney to a contract extension, but recently some details have been leaked that could paint a clear picture as to why they did.
Why Don Sweeney May Have Been Signed To An Extension
Jeff Marek recently spoke on his podcast about the move the Boston Bruins made with GM Don Sweeney, and believes that the Bruins were going to have a hard time bringing in some free agents without having Sweeney signed to an extension.
"I wonder how much this was 'Look we are gonna have a hard time attracting free agents if everyone thinks this is a lame duck general manager'," revealed Marek on his podcast.
This is just pure speculation from an insider, but there is some evidence that this could be a problem when Rick Tocchet came out and stated that he didn't want to take the Bruins head coaching position because Sweeney's history with head coaches, and the fact he wasn't signed past the upcoming season.
"His concern with Boston was that the GM maybe has 1-2 years left," said the source as per RG Media.
