Sadden news strikes Boston Bruins goaltender: An announcement confirmed it's officially over
Former Boston Bruins goaltender Jaroslav Halak has announced that he is officially retiring from the NHL after 17 seasons.
This was confirmed in a statement to Tomas Prokop of Dennik Sport:
Jaroslav Halák has officially retired at age 40. He played in the NHL from 2006 to 2023, appeared in 581 games, suited up for eight teams, and won the William M. Jennings Trophy twice. He confirmed it to me in an interview for @DennikSport
During the 2018 season, the Boston Bruins signed Halak to a two-year, $5.5 million contract. During his time with the Bruins, he was one of the best backup goaltenders in the league.
Over three years with the Boston Bruins,
Halak had a 49-23-14 record, with a .918 save percentage, and a 2.40 goals against average.
He also went on to win the William M. Jennings Trophy during the 2019-20 season.
His time with the Boston Bruins came to an end during the 2020-21 season after he signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Vancouver Canucks.
He ended up finishing his career in the NHL with the New York Rangers in 2022-23, and that was the last season he appeared in an NHL game.
Halak had one last wish before retiring
Halak stated that he wished he could have played one more season to hit the 300 career wins mark, but he has come to terms with finishing his career at 295 career wins.
"It's been two years and I've come to terms with not reaching 300. Looking back on my career, it's been a good one. It would have been nicer with 300 wins, but I'll be happy with 295."
Enjoy retirement, Jaroslav!
