This player is about to be the highest paid player in the NHL
Toronto Maple Leafs' general manager, Brad Treliving, has been diligently working behind the scenes, aiming to secure long-term extensions for two key members of the team's core lineup.
As they enter the final year of their respective contracts, negotiations have been heating up.
The ongoing talks surrounding
William Nylander's future seem to have hit a roadblock, primarily due to disagreements over the dollar value involved.
However, the same cannot be said for Toronto's superstar forward,
Auston Matthews, whose contract discussions appear to be progressing positively. Reports circulating in the hockey world suggest that a deal may be imminent.
During his appearance on the Sportsnet 590 The Fan show, renowned hockey analyst Nick Kypreos shared an intriguing piece of information regarding Matthews' anticipated contract.
Kypreos confidently asserted,
"Everyone I've talked to says it's $13.5 million AAV."
The figures discussed indicate that Matthews' future deal could potentially make him one of the highest-paid players in the league.
Although the exact duration of the contract remains undecided, insiders close to the negotiations believe that it will likely span between three to five years.
This decision will ultimately shape the course of Matthews' career and solidify his commitment to the Maple Leafs organization.
While the 25-year-old phenom experienced a slight regression from his outstanding 60-goal, 106-point season in 2021-2022, he still managed to contribute significantly, tallying an impressive 40 goals and 85 points throughout the 2022-2023 campaign.
It's important to note that Matthews battled through a nagging wrist injury for a significant portion of last season, which undeniably impacted his ability to find the back of the net with the same ease.
Consequently, his signature wrist shot was noticeably underutilized compared to previous seasons.
As negotiations progress and the pieces fall into place, it's only a matter of time before Matthews officially joins the ranks of the NHL's most exorbitantly compensated players.
