The New York Islanders have locked up their star forward Mathew Barzal for many years to come.
''The New York Islanders announced today that Mathew Barzal has agreed to terms on an eight-year contract.''
Barzal, like the entire Islanders team, had a down year in the 2021-22 NHL season. The All-Star centre had 15 goals and 44 assists to lead his team in points.
NHL insider broke the value of the contract not long after :
Originally selected 16th overall by New York in the 2015 Entry Draft, and has appeared in 362 games with the club since.
At just 25, he ranks 23rd on the Islanders all-time points list with 91 goals and 220 assists.
It may seem as an overpay, but the B.C. native has lead his team in points every season he's been in the league.
A huge factor of his low point totals compared to other players is Barry Trotz's defensive system.
