It was a big night for the man they call "Big Z"!
Former Bruins team captain Zdeno Chara reached an important milestone when he stepped onto the ice with his New York Islanders teammates to take on the San Jose Sharks on Thursday night.
By doing so, the 44-year-old veteran set a new league record for most NHL games played by a defenseman. Chara suited up in 1652nd game to pass Chris Chelios in the record books.
The 6'9'' Slovakian spent most of his career as a member of the Bruins, with whom he suited up for 1023 of his NHL-record 1652 games over a period of 14 seasons.
Chara is one of six defensemen in NHL history to have played in over 1600 games, the others being chelios (1651), Scott Stevens (1635), Larry Murphy (1615) and Bruins legend Ray Bourque (1612).
