Commissioner Gary Bettman made his claim by immediately expanding the NHL - and ever since - when he took over.
The last two expansion teams were the Vegas Golden Knights in 2017 and the Seattle Kraken in 2021, and besides a few bumps, both have been a huge success. The Golden Knights have been consistent Stanley Cup contenders since entering the league, while after a rough opening year, the Kraken are starting to gain traction.
And now, it's reported that Bettman wants to continue expanding the already 32-team league.
According to TSN's Chris Johnston, the NHL wants to start expanding within the next two years, but where to? Cities that have been mentioned include Houston, Quebec City, Kansas City, Milwaukee and Hamilton.
