Calgary Flames Noah Hanifin has not received the same recognition as some other significant players, as he's quietly turned into one of the league's best defensemen.
Hanifin, a Boston native, was originally selected fifth overall by the Carolina Hurricanes at the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, and before that, spent one season at Boston College. Now, it's been rumored that the Bruins have been heavily interested in the defenseman for a while now, but the Flames won't budge on their ridiculously high asking price.
According to Steve MacFarlane of Calgary Hockey Now, the conversation immediately stopped when the Bruins were told the price.
''So, barring some miraculous deal that makes
David Pastrnak the Calgary Flames' best right-winger since the departure of Jarome Iginla, the Bruins conversation is a non-starter.''
''At least when it comes to Hanifin.''
Jimmy Murphy of Boston Hockey Now responded to the report, but he didn't deny a possibility of it happening:
''Anything is possible. Do I think it happens? No. But never say no chance. I heard no chance on Joe Thornton,
Tyler Seguin and
Torey Krug. How'd that go?''
That price is a bit steep; even though Hanifin is an outstanding top-four defenseman, asking for Pastrnak in return seems absurd. Worth a shot if you're the Flames GM, though!
Hanifin has two years left on a six-year, $29.7 million contract ($4.95 million AAV). It's probably best for the Bruins to wait and see if he's a free agent then to try and acquire him, as there's no doubt the Boston native would love to return home.
