This off-season, multiple former Boston Bruins players have already called it a career from professional hockey.
The list includes
Tyler Johnson, Jaroslav Halak, and Reilly Nash.
Now another former Boston Bruins player has officially announced that he is hanging up the skates for good.
Blake Wheeler confirms his retirement from the NHL
Blake Wheeler is calling it a career after 1,172 games! 👏
Best of luck in retirement, Blake!
Wheeler was originally drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes, but began his NHL career with the Boston Bruins.
During the 2008 NHL off-season, the Boston Bruins ended up signing him to his entry-level contract after deciding not to sign with the Coyotes after being drafted by them in the 2004 NHL Entry Level Draft.
He would spend the first three years in the NHL with the Boston Bruins from 2008-09 to 2010-11.
Appearing in 221 games with the Bruins, he scored 50 goals, and 60 assists for 110 points while being a plus-40. Wheeler also had a pretty impressive rookie season, scoring 21 goals, 45 points in 81 games with the Bruins.
During the 2011 NHL trade deadline, Wheeler's career came to an end whenever he was traded to the Atlanta Thrashers with Mark Stuart, in exchange for Rich Peverley and Boris Valabik.
This move would be beneficial for Wheeler as he would develop into a legit star int he league, and ended up becoming the captain of the Jets.
In 16 years in the NHL, he split time between the Boston Bruins, Atlanta Thrashers, Winnipeg Jets, and New York Rangers, scoring a combined 321 goals, 622 assists, for 943 points.
