Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney Issued A Shocking Statement on Ex-Bruins Captain Brad Marchand

Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney recently appeared on a podcast, and had an interesting statement on former Bruins captain Brad Marchand.
Don Sweeney loved Brad Marchand, and was a big fan of him, but coming up to the NHL trade deadline he knew it was the right move for both sides to end up trading him.
The General Manager ended up admitting that there was a pretty big gap in contract talks between the captain and upper management, and there was multiple reports that Marchand ended up turning down multiple contract offers from the Bruins before being traded.
Marchand is set to be a unrestricted free agent this summer, and Don Sweeney did not want to lose Marchand for nothing, and instead traded Marchand to the Florida Panthers for a chance to go at another Stanley Cup.
Sweeney With a Shocking Statement On Brad Marchand
Recently, Sweeney ended up appearing on the "100% Hockey" podcast, and he stated just how hard it was not to only trade Marchand, but not being able to find common ground on a contract that would have kept him a Bruin for his entire career.
«The deadline was very challenging,» Sweeney said. «I have a 20-year relationship with Brad dating back to when he was drafted. ... When it was clear that we weren't gonna find a contract, we just felt that the best decision for the organization - and now maybe where Brad sits today - maybe the best decision for him to have an opportunity to go back into a high-leverage situation that he craves and thrives in."
Marchand is currently in the playoffs, trying to make another run at a Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers, while the Boston Bruins ended their season early this year.
«His legacy will never be tarnished as a Boston Bruin,» Sweeney said. «In all likelihood, he'll be in the (TD Garden) rafters and in the Hall of Fame.»
