Boston Bruins to trade goaltender Joonas Korpisalo: Bruins are having a big issue with him
Joonas Korpsialo was signed by the Ottawa Senators in 2023-24 to a five-year, $20 million contract as they were looking to find a new starting goaltender.
Korpisalo ended up helping the Kings make the playoffs in 2023, but his play did not carry over with
the Ottawa Senators.
In the trade, the Senators retained 25% of his $4 million cap hit. Ottawa ended up making the playoffs with newly acquired goaltender Linus Ullmark, whereas the Boston Bruins ended up missing the playoffs for the first time in eight years.
Jeremy Swayman did not help the case, as he struggled big time, allowing the most goals during the 2024-25 season with 176.
The Bruins looked to Korpisalo to pick up the team, but he also had his struggles as well finishing the season with an 11-10-3 record, 2.90 goals against average, and a .893 save percentage.
The rumors have recently picked up a lot recently after the Boston Bruins ended up signing
Michael DiPietro.
With Korpisalo being signed for another three years at $3 million per year, trying to move him is going to be a big problem for the organization.
Backup goaltenders do not normally make $3 million, and trying to move on from him would be a big problem for the Boston Bruins.
If the Bruins do want to try and trade Korpisalo, they may have to retain some salary in a trade which is not ideal.
