Charlie McAvoy issued a statement regarding his health after his season ending injury: It's surprising
"It was a long summer, but in a lot of ways it was beneficial," McAvoy said Wednesday, "a chance to have a lot of months, to put in a lot of work, which is nice, something that I haven't really had since we have always been a playoff team.
"It was a longer summer, but I used it to my advantage."
McAvoy ended up taking part in Team USA's Olympic Orientation Camp, and was one of the first six players to be named to the preliminary roster for the Olympics.
He ended up suffering his injury during the 4 Nations Face-Off, but it ended quickly after he suffered an acromioclavicular (AC) joint of his right shoulder during a 6-1 win against Finland in their opening game.
McAvoy was then treated, and was given the go ahead to face Team Canada where they won 3-1, but his injury took a turn. McAvoy noticed a red mark that was creeping up his shoulder, confusing the doctors, and suffered in some terrible pain.
Once they got back to Boston for the 4 Nations, McAvoy was admitted to the Massachusetts General Hospital where he had X-rays, MRIs and bloodwork done.
That would cause him to miss the remainder of the year, and did not help the fact that the Boston Bruins finished the season with a 33-39-10 record.
"What happened to me was simply bad luck," McAvoy said April 17 during breakup day. "There's always a risk of that happening, but you don't ever hear about it. And it happened to me, so you want to talk about a perfect storm, the why me and how did this happen? There's not necessarily that anyone did anything wrong; I just happened to have an infection that took place.
"The reality is there's no one to blame. It's just bad luck that this happened."
McAvoy stated that he got healthy towards the end of the year, and would have played if the Bruins were in a different position, but it was best to fully rest and heal it for next season.
"I got healthy pretty close to the end of the season," McAvoy said. "If we had been in a different situation, I could have played. I would have played if we had made the playoffs, but it was probably for the best that I didn't have to and gave my shoulder a full chance to heal and feel good this year."
