Charlie McAvoy issues a heartbreaking last statement after suffering a season ending injury
«Not a great year, not really, by any stretch,» the Bruins defenseman stated. «There were certainly some pockets of good memories, I guess. But overall, really a year to forget - with an unfortunate ending on my side.»
During the
4 Nations Face-Off, McAvoy represented his country, which ultimately led to a suggested shoulder injury in the USA's opening game against Finland, which was believed to be very minor, however, it turned out to be much worse than anyone could imagine.
Fast-forward two more games played, the defenseman was experiencing unbearable pain, he couldn't sleep and no one could figure out what was wrong.
However, a visit to the Mass General Hospital not only revealed that McAvoy was suffering a Grade 5 separation of his AC joint, but that it had also developed a staph infection that required an immediate procedure.
Just three months later, the defenseman's shoulder is nearly healed, yet, he is still coming to grips with what happened and reveals he is using it as motivation.
«It's all just motivation, really, to not feel like this again. Never been here, and I don't want to be here again.»
«I've gone through so much because of that damn experience,» McAvoy acknowledged. «Like, it cost me my season. It cost me my sanity in a lot of ways. Like, none of this has been easy, and I get emotional. it was an incredible experience, and I waited my whole life to be a part of something like that.»
«But the way that it ended, and the aftermath of it, and what I had to go through, it cost me a lot more than I was willing to give, and that's unfortunate, but it's over now. And now I can finally put it to bed. And after we talk about it, I don't want to talk about it ever again, honestly. Because it did cost me. It cost me a lot.»
Although McAvoy's experience is heartbreaking and is an unbelievable sight to see in the hockey world, it is exciting to know we can expect this young defenseman to hit the ice fully recovered for the 2025/26 NHL season.
