Don Sweeney hit a home run for the Boston Bruins at the Trade Deadline, most notably, the addition of Dmitry Orlov to the backend, but the defender thinks otherwise.
The Bruins also added more toughness in his longtime teammate from the Washington Capitals, Garnet Hathaway, who received the utmost respect from Orlov.
What Hathaway Brings to the Table
Although Hathaway is the type of player that won't always help out offensively, there's no question he gets inside his opponent's head. Specifically, the opposing defensemen, as Orlov shared with Ty Anderson of 98.5 The Sports Hub:
''He's bringing a lot of physicality, and I think it's important. Sometimes when you get hit two to three times as a defenseman when you get the puck, [it's hard] because you know you're going to get smashed again.''
''He's obviously a strong guy. and it's always sticking in your mind as a defenseman. And you sometimes just try to maybe go stick-on-puck and you lose it in a moment when you actually should try to make a play and take a hit, you know, and it's not easy to play against these guys.''
Hathaway exemplified what he brings to the Bruins during Saturday's divisional matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning at TD Garden. Just nine seconds into the game, Hathaway dropped the gloves with Patrick Maroon, setting the tone between the rivals.
Not only that, Hathaway would end up with the game-winner with less than three minutes remaining in the second period, as Boston held on for a 2-1 win over the Lightning.
Since being acquired by the Bruins on February 27th, the 31-year-old has registered 3 goals, 2 assists, a plus-three and 39 hits in 15 games.
