As of now, general manager Don Sweeney and the Boston Bruins have a cap space of $24.3 mil for the 2023 offseason. Obviously, they have a whole summer and season to worry about first, but it's never a terrible idea to look ahead.
If Boston decides to buy out Foligno, they will free up $1,866,666 this year while carrying a hit of $933,334 with them next year. If they send the veteran to Providence, though, the club will free up $1,125,000 without any carryover into next season. The most sense would be assigning him to Providence. Boston would be able to utilize him in the AHL with the added benefit of mentoring the prospects, but would he report?
