The Pittsburgh Penguins have officially signed defenseman Kris Letang to a contract extension to keep him from hitting the open market on July 13th.
The club announced that they signed the three-time Stanley Cup champion and NHL all-star to a six-year, $36.6 million ($6.1 million AAV) contract to essentially keep him a member of the Penguins his entire career.
He will be 41 when the contract expires...
Letang was selected in the third round (62nd overall) by the Penguins in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. He made his debut playing seven games during the 2006-07 season with Pittsburgh.
Now, 16 seasons and 941 games into his career, the 35-year-old has collected 144 goals and 506 assists for a total of 650 points. Most notably, the veteran has appeared in 149 playoff games and 23 goals and 67 assists along the way.
Of course, he's been a part of the core with
Sidney Crosby and
Evgeni Malkin, that brought three Stanley Cup championships back to Pittsburgh.
